On the death of James [Howard], 3rd Earl of Suffolk and 3rd Baron Howard de Walden on 7 Jan 1688, the Barony of Howard de Walden fell into abeyance between his two daughters: (1) Lady Essex Howard, wife of Edward [Griffin], 1st Baron Griffin; and her half-sister (2) Lady Elizabeth Howard, wife of Sir Thomas Felton, 4th Bt., of Playford, co. Suffolk. The abeyance was terminated 3 Aug 1784 in favour of the senior coheir

On his death the Barony of Braybrooke devolved on his distant cousin in accordance with the special remainder and the Barony of Howard de Walden fell into abeyance between his sister, Mary Whitwell, wife of Dr William Parker later Griffin DD, and the descendants of Lady Elizabeth Felton. On the death of Mrs Griffin on 17 Nov 1799 without children there were no surviving descendants of Lady Essex Griffin and so the right to the Barony of Howard de Walden passed to:
