On his death the Barony of Cromwell fell into abeyance between his two nieces and co-heiress, Maud, Lady Willoughby de Eresby later Lady Nevill, and Joan, Lady Bourchier later Lady Radcliffe.  On the death of the younger niece on 10 Mar 1490 without issue the barony devolved upon her elder sister

On her death the Barony of Cromwell fell into abeyance amongst the descendants of the three sisters of her grandfather, Ralph [de Cromwell], 2nd Baron Cromwell:  Amice, Lady Bardolf, Maud, Lady FitzWilliam, and Elizabeth, Lady Clifton later Lady Bensted.  The barony was called out of abeyance after 426 years on 16 Jul 1923 in favour of:
