On the death of the 1st Duke of Douglas on 21 Jul 1761, the Dukedom of Douglas and minor honours granted to him in 1703 became extinct, and the Marquessate of Douglas, the Earldom of Angus and the Lordship of Abernethy and Jedburgh Forest passed to his second cousin twice removed and heir male, James George [Hamilton], 7th Duke of Hamilton, great-great-grandson of William [Douglas], 1st Earl of Selkirk, later Duke of Hamilton for life, 1st son by his second wife of William [Douglas], 1st Marquess of Douglas
