The Lordship of Fleming was held by the Earls of Wigtown from 19 Mar 1605/6 until 16 May 1747, when on the death of Charles [Fleming], 7th Earl of Wigtown, 12th Lord Fleming, etc., with no male heir all his titles became extinct. Shortly after the death of the 7th Earl of Wigtown the title was assumed by Dr Charles Ross Flemyng, of Dublin, who claimed to be a descendant of Hon Alexander Fleming, 4th son of the 1st Earl of Wigtown. He was debarred by the House of Lords' Committee for Privileges from assuming the title until he had established his claim to it. This he never did.
