The Barony of Herbert was held by the Earls of Pembroke (Earls of Huntingdon from 4 Jul 1479) from 8 Sep 1468 until 16 Jul 1491, when on the death of William [Herbert], 1st Earl of Huntingdon and formerly 2nd Earl of Pembroke, without a male heir the Earldom of Huntingdon became extinct and the Barony of Herbert, according to modern doctrine, passed to his only daughter and heiress,

her husband is generally stated to have been created by letters patent dated 26 Nov 1506 "Baron Herbert of Raglan, Chepstow and Gower" but "no enrolment of this patent....has been found bearing on this creation" - he was, however, sum. to Parliament in his wife's barony 17 Oct 1509 and 28 Nov 1511 and was created Earl of Worcester by letters patent 1 Feb 1513/4

The Barony of Herbert was held by the Earls of Worcester (Marquesses of Worcester from 2 Mar 1642/3 and Dukes of Beaufort from 2 Dec 1682) until 5 Feb 1984, when on the death of Henry Hugh FitzRoy [Somerset], 10th Duke of Beaufort, 18th Baron Herbert, etc., the Baronies of Herbert and Botetourt (cr. by writ 13 Jul 1305) fell into abeyance between the descendants of his sister Lady Blanche Linnie Eliot later Douglas, sometime Countess of St Germans, as follows:
