Member of Parliament (Tory) for Hindon 1734-41 and for York 1742-61; took the additional name of Lane by Act of Parliament 1750/1 on succeeding to the estates of his maternal half-uncle, James [Lane], 2nd Viscount Lanesborough
On the death of the 1st Baron Bingley the 1762 Barony of Bingley became extinct. The Lanesborough estates passed to his brother James Fox and the Bramham Park estate to his nephew, James Fox-Lane. In 1933 George Richard Lane-Fox, of Bramham Park, co. York, great-great-grandson of James Fox-Lane, was created Baron Bingley.
