On 5 July 1746 Hugh [Fortescue], 14th Baron Clinton, was created Earl Clinton and Baron Fortescue, of Castle Hill in the County of Devon. The Barony of Fortescue had a special remainder, failing heirs male of his body, to his half-brother, Matthew Fortescue. On the death of the Earl Clinton on 2 May 1751 the Earldom of Clinton became extinct, the Barony of Clinton fell into abeyance between his sister of the whole blood, Margaret Fortescue, and his cousin Margaret, Dowager Countess of Orford, and the Barony of Fortescue passed to his half-brother,
