The origin of this peerage is very obscure.  Its position as second of the three most ancient Baronies of Ireland is not doubted, and has been confirmed in almost every Irish Parliament.  Its possessor was one of the nine Irish Barons summoned to Greenwich by King Henry VII in 1489, and was then ranked after Lord Athenry, the premier Baron, and before Lord Kerry.  There is some confusion as to the actual title:  "Baron of Kingsale, Baron Courcy of Courcy and Baron of Ringrone" and "Lord Kingsale, Baron Courcy of Courcy, and Baron of Ringrone" are two of the alternatives.  In an official report of 1627 the owner is called "Lord Courcy, Baron of Kingsale, and Baron of Ringrone" whereas in the resolution of the Irish House of Lords on 4 Oct 1721 he is called "Lord Baron of Kingsale and Baron of Courcy and Ringrone".
