Member of Parliament 1661-70; arrested immediately after the discovery of the Rye House Plot 1683, but released on bail; a committed supporter of the "Glorious Revolution"; taken prisoner at Cirencester 1688 when leading a body of 70 horse to join William, Prince of Orange; sent to Gloucester jail from where he was rescued by Capt Bertie ; occupied Oxford for the Prince of Orange with a force of 300 horse 1688; Capt of the Band of Gentlemen Pensioners and Chief Justice in Eyre, South of Trent, 1688/9-93; owing to his extravagence and the debts of 20,000 (1,661,000 in 2005 value) he inherited from his father, the family estates in Berkshire, including Hurley, were sold; Steward and Lieutenant of Woodstock Manor and Park
