Title:

21st Earl of Morton

(Scotland, let. pat. 14 Mar 1457/58)

To raise money for the Royalist cause the 7th Earl of Morton sold the Barony of Dalkeith (from which the heir to the Earldom had taken his style and title) and other lands to Francis [Scott], 2nd Earl of Buccleuch, and received in compensation on 15 Jun 1643 the islands of Orkney and Zetland, subject to their redemption for £30,000 by the Crown;  it appears that shortly after this sale the designation of "Aberdour" was adopted as the style of the heir apparent to the Earldom - this is unusual in that Aberdour is not of itself a peerage title but comes from one of the properties attached to the Earldom;  their appears to have been no official sanction for this substitution, but according to Debrett's in 1638 Aberdour was erected into a burgh of Barony and the title was altered to Earl of Morton and Lord Aberdour.
