early in the service of Sir Arthur Chichester, Lord Deputy of Ireland 1604/5-15, through whom he acquired leases of Crown lands in many Irish counties before 1606-07, and later took an active part in the colonisation of Ulster; Comptroller of the Works [I] for life 1606; Joint Clerk of the Council in Munster 1607-11; Clerk of the Tallies and Pells [I] 1612-25; Constable of the Fort of Mountnorris, co. Armagh 1612-26; Member of the Irish Parliament for Lismore 1613-14 and for co. Armagh 1614-15, and of the English Parliament for Carmarthen Borough 1625 and for Newton-in-Makerfield 1628-29; knighted 1616; Privy Councillor [I] 1616-35/6; a Commissioner for the Reformation of Ireland 1621/2, the Plantation of Ulster 1622, and of Musters 1625; Vice-Treasurer and Receiver of the Revenue [I] 1625 ; Treasurer at Wars 1632; gave such offence to the Earl of Strafford, then Lord Deputy of Ireland, that in 1635 he was sentenced to death by a Council of War on a trumped-up charge of mutinous conduct; he was reprieved and imprisoned in Dublin Castle until 1637; whilst he was imprisoned he was stripped of all his offices before a full Council 1635/6 on the charges of misbehaviour and corruption; he was pardoned under the Great Seal 1637 and kissed the King's hands; the House of Commons resolved in 1640 that the actions of the Earl of Strafford against him were illegal and unjust but he was not able to regain his former offices; he took no active part in the Civil War and in 1647 he was living at Thorganby, co. York, where he was a Commissioner for the County Militia in 1648

The Viscountcy of Valentia was held by the Earls of Anglesey from 20 Apr 1661 until 14 Feb 1751, when on the death of Richard [Annesley], 6th Earl of Anglesey, 7th Viscount Valentia, etc., there were contradictory decisions by the English House of Lords and the Irish House of Lords on the validity of the 6th Earl's marriages.  He had issue only by his third marriage.  The Irish House of Lords accepted the validity of this marriage and consequently his eldest son by that marriage, Arthur Annesley, was allowed to succeed as 8th Viscount Valentia.  However, the English House of Lords were of a contrary opinion and, rejecting the validity of the third marriage, declared the Earldom of Anglesey to have become extinct.
