Extinct Scottish Marquessates

 

Angus and Abernethy, Marquess of (S, 1703 - 1761) - the marquessate was held by the 1st and last Duke of Douglas from 1703, when the 3rd Marquess of Douglas was created Lord Douglas of Bonkill, Prestoun and Robertoun, Viscount of Jedburgh Forest, Marquess of Angus and Abernethy and Duke of Douglas, until 1761, when the Dukedom of Douglas and the other 1703 titles became extinct and the Marquessate of Douglas passed to the 7th Duke of Hamilton

Annandale, Marquess of (S, 1701 - 1792)

Argyll, Marquess of (S, 1641 - forfeited 1661)

 

Ballinbreich, Marquess of (S, 1680 - 1681) - the marquessate was held by the 1st and last Duke of Rothes from 1680, when the 7th Earl of Rothes was created Lord Auchmotie and Caskieberrie, Viscount of Lugtoun, Earl of Leslie, Marquess of Ballinbreich and Duke of Rothes, until 1681, when he died without surviving male issue and the Dukedom of Rothes and the other peerages created in 1680 became extinct and the Earldom of Rothes passed to his elder daughter as heir of line

 

Hamilton, Marquess of (S, 1599 - 1651)

 

March, Marquess of (S, 1672 - 1682) - the marquessate was held by the 1st and last Duke of Lauderdale from 1672, when the 2nd Earl of Lauderdale was created Lord Thirlestane, Musselburgh and Boultoun, Viscount Maitland, Earl of Lauderdale, Marquess of March and Duke of Lauderdale, until 1682, when he died without surviving male issue and the Dukedom of Lauderdale and the other peerages created in 1672 became extinct and the Earldom of Lauderdale passed to his brother

 

Ormond, Marquess of (S, 1488 - 1504) - the marquessate was held by Prince James, 2nd son of King James III from 1488, when he was created Lord of Brechin and Nevar, Earl of Eberdale, Marquess of Ormond and Duke of Ross, until 1504, when he died unmarried

Ormond, Marquess of (S, 1600 - merged with the Crown 1625) - the marquessate was held by Prince Charles, 2nd son of King James I, from 1600, when he was created Lord Ardmannoch, Earl of Ross, Marquess of Ormond and Duke of Albany, until 1625, when he succeeded his father as King and all his peerage titles merged with the Crown

 

Wigton, Marquess of (S, 1602 - 1602) - the marquessate was held by Prince Robert, 3rd son of King James I, from Feb 1602, when he was created Earl of Carrick, Marquess of Wigton and Duke of Kintyre, until his death a few months later in May 1602
