note
the marital relationships of the 8th Earl of Aldborough were somewhat confused - a few months before his divorce on 23 Sep 1826 he married at the British Embassy in Paris Mary Arundell, dau. of Samuel Arundell, of Dursley, co. Gloucester. As "Mary, widow of Mason Gerard, Earl of Aldborough" she unsuccessfully opposed the claim of the 6th Earl to the Peerage on behalf of her own son, Henry Stratford. This was despite the will of the 5th Earl where he states that he "never was married to a Miss Tandy", that his issue by her are "natural children" and that he has "no legitimate child but those of May Arundell, Countess of Aldborough" to whom and to whose children he leaves everything. To make matters even more confused, there was a document sealed with the will in which the 5th Earl states "before I ever saw Miss Tandy I was married to Miss Maria Teresa Devenport, who was then alive."
