Essex, under the will of Francis Barrington, merchant, whose wife Elizabeth was his first cousin;  he took the name of Barrington in lieu of that of Shute by Act of Parliament 1716;  Member of Parliament (Whig) for Berwick-upon-Tweed 1715-22/3, when he was expelled from the House of Commons for promoting a fraudulent lottery;  obtained the reversion of the office of Master of the Rolls of Ireland 1717 but he surrendered it in 1731
