a close friend of the poet, Lord Byron, and visited Albania with him in 1809; a partner in the firm of Whitbread & Co, brewers, of London; FRS 1814; imprisoned in Newgate Prison 1819-20 for a breach of parliamentary privilege; Member of Parliament for Westminster 1820-33, for Nottingham 1834-47, and for Harwich 1848-51; suc. his father 14 Aug 1831 as 2nd Baronet, styled "of Broughton-Gifford, Bradford-on-Avon, and of Monkton Farleigh, Wiltshire"; Privy Councillor 1832; Secretary of State for War 1832-33; Chief Secretary for Ireland 1833; Chief Commissioner of Woods and Forests 1834; President of the Board of Control 1835-41 and 1846-52; GCB 1852

 

On the death of the 1st Baron Broughton the Barony of Broughton became extinct and the baronetcy passed to his nephew.
