in accordance with the will of his maternal uncle, Earl Canning, he took the additional name of Canning by Royal Licence 1862; Member of Parliament (Liberal) for co. Galway 1867-71

On the death of the 2nd Marquess of Clanricarde all his titles became extinct except for the Earldom of Clanricarde created in 1800, which under the terms of the special remainder contained in the Letters Patent creating the title passed to his cousin once removed George Ulick [Browne], 6th Marquess of Sligo, as the next heir of the 1st Earl of Clanricarde of this creation, passing over his five sisters and their descendants.
