served in the army of France and subsequently, c. 1674, in that of Holland, fighting at the Battle of Seneff against the French;  made Capt of one of the Troops of Horse raised by King Charles II against the Covenanters 1678, where he gained the name of "Bloody Cavers";  Sheriff of Wigtown 1682;  granted the castle of Dudhope and the constabulary of Dundee 1684;  Privy Councillor to both King Charles II and King James II;  Maj General in the Army 1686 ; with King James II in London and tried to dissuade him from retreating in the face of the Dutch forces of King William III;  attended the Edinburgh convention 1688/9;  called a Parliament at Stirling on behalf of King James II and defeated General Mackay at the pass of Killiecrankie, but was himself killed in that battle.

he was at the Battle of Killiecrankie with his brother; on 13 June 1690 a decreet of forfeiture was issued against his late brother whereby all his honours became forfeited; he joined the Court of the deposed King James II at St Germain 1692

Even though the Viscountcy of Dundee had been forfeited in 1690, several of the collateral heirs male of the grantee claimed the title following the death of the 3rd Viscount.
