Lt Col of the Duke of York's Regiment of Foot Guards;  Treasurer of the Chamber to King Charles II 1679-85 and to King James II 1685-88;  escaped drowning in the wreck of the "Gloucester" off the Yorkshire coast 1682;  he followed King James II into exile and was with his son, the titular King James III, in France until 1707/8, when he was taken prisoner on board the "Salisbury" off Leith whilst on a mission to Scotland; tried for treason and condemned to death 1708, he was reprieved shortly before the date set for his execution and spent the rest of his life in the Tower of London
