The Lordship of Hailes was held by the Earls of Bothwell from 17 Oct 1488 until 29 Dec 1567, when on the attainder of James [Hepburn], 1st Duke of Orkney, 4th Earl of Bothwell, etc., the third husband of Mary I, Queen of Scotland, all his titles were forfeited to the Crown.
