in 1423 he was sent to Durham as one of the hostages for the safe return of King James I; between 1424 and 1427 he was deprived of the Earldom of Strathearn on the grounds that it was a male fee; in England again in 1427 as one of the hostages for King James's ransom in place of Sir Robert Erskine, held at Pontefract Castle and not released until 1453
