suc. his father as 7th Earl of Rothes 23 Aug 1641; President of the Scottish Council 1660;  an Extraordinary Lord of Session 1660/1;  Lord High Treasurer of Scotland 1663;  Lord High Commissioner to the Scottish Parliament 1663, 1665 and 1666;  on 4 Jul 1663 he obtained a regrant of the Earldom of Rothes and Lordship of Leslie and Ballinbreich, together with his estates, with remainder to the heirs of his body without division (the husband of each female to take the name of Leslie), whom failing to the issue of his two sisters, and thereafter to other remainders;  Privy Councillor [E] 1663;  Captain General of the Scottish Forces 1664;  Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland 1664;  Lord High Commissioner to the National Synod of the Church of Scotland 1664;  Lord High Chancellor of Scotland 1667-81

On the death of the 1st Duke of Rothes the Dukedom of Rothes and the other peerages created in 1680 became extinct and the Earldom of Rothes and other peerages inherited from his father passed to his elder daughter, Lady Margaret Leslie
