On the death of the 3rd Earl of Sheffield all his titles except for the Barony of Sheffield (cr. 1783) became extinct. In accordance with the terms of the special remainder the Barony of Sheffield passed to his first cousin once removed, Edward Lyulph [Stanley], 4th Baron Stanley of Alderley. The estate of Sheffield Park, near Uckfield, co. Sussex, was sold shortly after the Earl's death to Mr Arthur Gilstrap Soames, 1st son of Arthur Soames, of Irnham Park, co. Lincoln.
