Garter stall plate of Thomas [Stanley], 1st Baron Stanley, KG

A quadrangular plate of gilded copy with fringed border, evidently intended to represent

a banner. On the field, which is delicately pounced with a beautiful branched pattern,

are the arms, with silver helm and red ermine-lined mantle, surmounted by the well

known Stanley crest. The mottled appearance of the enamel is due to incomplete fusion.

The Barony of Stanley was held by the Earls of Derby from 27 Oct 1485 until 19 Apr 1594, when on the death of Ferdinando [Stanley], 6th Earl of Derby, 7th Baron Stanley, etc., the Barony of Stanley (together with the Baronies of Mohun and Strange of Knockyn, both created by writ in 1299) fell into abeyance between his three daughters. On 17 Dec 1920 Lady Barbara Huddleston Abney-Hastings, suo jure Countess of Loudoun, the senior co-heiress of Lady Elizabeth Hastings, Countess of Huntingdon (the youngest of the three daughters of the 6th Earl of Derby) was declared by a resolution of the House of Lords to be, along with her two younger sisters, a co-heir to the Baronies of Stanley, Strange of Knockyn, Botreaux, Hungerford, de Moleyns, Hastings of Hastings and Hastings of Hungerford; on 23 Feb 1921 the abeyances of the Baronies of Stanley, Botreaux and Hastings of Hastings were terminated in her favour, but on her death on 24 Feb 1960 the three baronies once again fell into abeyance, this time between her five daughters:
