Extinct English Viscountcies

 

Ascott, Viscount (E, 1628 - 1709) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Carnarvon from 1628, when the 2nd Baron Dormer was created Viscount Ascott and Earl of Carnarvon, until 1709, when on the death of the 2nd Earl of Carnarvon the viscountcy of Ascott and the Earldom of Carnarvon became extinct and the Barony of Dormer passed to a second cousin

 

Barfleur, Viscount (E, 1697 - 1727) - the viscountcy was held by the 1st Earl of Orford from its creation in 1697, when Edward Russell was created Baron of Shingay, Viscount Barfleur and Earl of Orford, until the earl's death in 1727, when all his titles became extinct

Bodmin, Viscount (E, 1679 - 1757) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Radnor from its creation in 1679, when the 2nd Baron Robartes was created Viscount Bodmin and Earl of Radnor, until 1757, when on the death of the 4th Earl of Radnor all his titles became extinct

Boston, Viscount (E, 1698 - 1754) - the viscountcy was held by the 1st Earl of Grantham from its creation in 1698, when Henry d'Auverquerque was created Baron Alford, Viscount Boston and Earl of Grantham, until his death in 1754 when all his titles became extinct

Bourchier, Viscount (E, 1446 - 1539/40)

Brackley, Viscount (E, 1616 - 1829) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Bridgewater from 1617, when the 2nd Viscount Brackley was created Earl of Bridgewater, and by the Dukes of Bridgewater from 1720, when the 4th Earl of Bridgewater was created Marquess of Brackley and Duke of Bridgewater, until 1803, when on the death of the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater the Dukedom of Bridgewater became extinct and the Earldom of Bridgewater, etc. passed to a cousin

Brandon, Viscount (E, 1679 - 1702) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Macclesfield from its creation in 1679, when the 1st Baron Gerard was created Viscount Brandon and Earl of Macclesfield, until 1702, when on the death of the 3rd Earl of Macclesfield all his titles became extinct

Bruce, Viscount (E, 1664 - 1747) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Elgin from 1664, when the 2nd Earl of Elgin was created Baron Bruce, Viscount Bruce and Earl of Ailesbury, until 1747, when on the death of the 4th Earl of Elgin the titles created in 1664 became extinct

 

Campden, Viscount (E, 1628 - 1798) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Gainsborough from 1682, when the 4th Viscount Campden was created Earl of Gainsborough, until 1798, when on the death of the 6th Earl of Gainsborough all his titles became extinct

Colchester, Viscount (E, 1621 - 1737) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls Rivers from 1626, when the 1st Viscount Colchester was created Earl Rivers, until 1737, when on the death of the 5th Earl Rivers all his titles became extinct

Conway, Viscount (E, 1627 - 1683) - the viscountcy was held by the 1st Earl of Conway from 1679, when the 3rd Viscount Conway was created Earl of Conway, until his death in 1683, when all his titles became extinct

Corbet, Viscount (E, 1679 - 1682)

Cornbury, Viscount (E, 1661 - 1753) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Clarendon from its creation in 1661, when the 1st Baron Hyde was created Viscount Cornbury and Earl of Clarendon, until 1753, when on the death of the 4th Earl of Clarendon and 2nd Earl of Rochester all his titles became extinct

Craven, Viscount (E, 1665 - 1697) - the viscountcy was held by the 1st Earl of Craven from its creation in 1665, when the 1st Baron Craven was created Viscount Craven and Earl of Craven, until his death in 1697, when the Barony of Craven passed to a cousin and the Viscountcy and Earldom of Craven became extinct

 

de Longueville, Viscount (E, 1690 - 1799)

Doncaster, Viscount (E, 1618 - 1660) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Carlisle from 1622, when the 1st Viscount Doncaster was created Earl of Carlisle, until 1660, when on the death of the 2nd Earl of Carlisle all his titles became extinct

Dorchester, Viscount (E, 1628 - 1632)

Dursley, Viscount (E, 1679 - 1942) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Berkeley from 1679, when the 9th Baron Berkeley was created Viscount Dursley and Earl of Berkeley, until 1942, when the 8th Earl of Berkeley died without a male heir and both titles became extinct

 

Falmouth, Viscount (E, 1674 - 1716) - the viscountcy was held by the 1st Earl of Northumberland from its creation in 1674, when George FitzRoy, illegitimate son of King Charles II, was created Baron Pontefract, Viscount Falmouth and Earl of Northumberland; in 1683 he was created Duke of Northumberland and on his death in 1716 all his titles became extinct

Fauconberg, Viscount (E, 1643 - 1815)

Fitzwalter, Viscount (E, 1525 - 1641) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Sussex from 1529, when the 1st Viscount Fitzwalter was created Earl of Sussex, until 1641, when on the death of the 6th Earl of Sussex the Viscountcy of Fitzwalter and the Earldom of Sussex became extinct

 

Glendale, Viscount (E, 1695 - 1701) - the viscountcy was held by the 1st Earl of Tankerville from its creation in 1695, when the 3rd Baron Grey was created Viscount Glendale and Earl of Tankerville, until the earl's death in 1701, when the creations of 1695 became extinct

Goderich, Viscount (E, 1706 - 1740) - the viscountcy was held by the 1st Marquess of Kent from 1706, when as 12th Earl of Kent he was created Viscount Goderich, Earl of Harold and Marquess of Kent;  he was further created Duke of Kent in 1710, and on his death without surviving male issue in 1740 all the titles became extinct

Granville, Viscount (E, 1661 - 1711) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Bath from 1661, when John Granville was created Baron Granville, Viscount Granville and Earl of Bath, until 1711, when on the death of the 3rd Earl of Bath all his titles became extinct

 

Halifax, Viscount (E, 1668 - 1700) - the 1st Viscount Halifax was created Earl of Halifax in 1679 and Marquess of Halifax in 1682; on the death of the 2nd Marquess of Halifax in 1700 all his peerage titles became extinct

Hatton, Viscount (E, 1682 - 1762)

Hinton St George, Viscount (E, 1706 - 1976) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls Poulett from 1706, when the 4th Baron Poulett was created Viscount Hinton St George and Earl Poulett, until 1976, when on the death of the 8th Earl Poulett all his titles became extinct

Howard of Bindon, Viscount (E, 1559 - 1610)

Hyde, Viscount (E, 1681 - 1753) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Rochester from 1682, when the 1st Viscount Hyde was created Earl of Rochester, until 1753, when on the death of the 2nd Earl of Rochester and 4th Earl of Clarendon all his titles became extinct

 

Latimer, Viscount (E, 1673 - 1964) - the 1st Viscount Latimer was created successively Earl of Danby, Marquess of Carmarthen and; Duke of Leeds; the viscountcy was held by the Dukes of Leeds from 1694 to 1964, when on the death of the 12th Duke of Leeds all his titles became extinct

Mansfield, Viscount (E, 1620 - 1691) - the 1st Viscount Mansfield was created successively Earl of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Marquess of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne; the viscountcy was held by the Dukes of Newcastle-upon-Tyne from 1664/5 until 1691, when on the death of the 2nd Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne all these titles became extinct

Montagu, Viscount (E, 1554 - 1797)

Montgomery, Viscount (E, 1687 - 1748) - the viscountcy was held by the Marquesses of Powis from its creation in 1687, when the 1st Earl of Powis was created Viscount Montgomery and Marquess of Powis, until 1748, when on the death of the 3rd Marquess of Powis all his titles became extinct

Monthermer, Viscount (E, 1689 - 1749) - the viscountcy was held by the 1st Earl of Montagu from its creation in 1689, when the 3rd Baron Montagu was created Viscount Monthermer and Earl of Montagu, and by the Dukes of Montagu from 1705, when the 1st Earl of Montagu was created Marquess of Monthermer and Duke of Montagu, until 1749, when on the death of the 2nd Duke of Montagu all his titles became extinct

Mordaunt, Viscount (E, 1659 - 1814) - the viscountcy was held by the 1st Earl of Monmouth from 1689, when the 2nd Viscount Mordaunt was created Earl of Monmouth, and by the Earls of Peterborough from 1697, when the 1st Earl of Monmouth succeeded his uncle as 3rd Earl of Peterborough, until 1814, when on the death of the 5th Earl of Peterborough all his titles became extinct

 

Newark, Viscount (E, 1627 - 1773) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Kingston-upon-Hull (later Dukes of Kingston-upon-Hull) from 1628, when the 1st Viscount Newark was created Earl of Kingston-upon-Hull, until 1773, when on the death of the 2nd Duke of Kingston-upon-Hull all his titles became extinct

Newport, Viscount (E, 1675 - 1762) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Bradford from 1694, when the 1st Viscount Newport was created Earl of Bradford, until 1762, when on the death of the 4th Earl of Bradford all his titles became extinct

Quarendon, Viscount (E, 1674 - 1776) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Lichfield from its creation in 1674, when Sir Edward Lee, 5th Bt., was created Baron Spelsbury, Viscount Quarendon and Earl of Lichfield, until 1776, when on the death of the 4th Earl of Lichfield all his titles became extinct

 

Radclyffe and Langley, Viscount (E, 1688 - attainted 1716) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Derwentwater from its creation in 1688, when Sir Francis Radclyffe, 3rd Bt., was created Baron Tyndale, Viscount Radclyffe and Langley, and Earl of Derwentwater, until 1716, when the 3rd Earl of Derwentwater was found guilty of treason and all his titles were forfeited

Rialton, Viscount (E, 1706 - 1766) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Godolphin from its creation in 1706, when the 1st Baron Godolphin was created Viscount Rialton and Earl of Godolphin, until 1766, when on the death of the 2nd Earl of Godolphin all three titles became extinct

Rochester, Viscount (E, 1611 - 1645) - the viscountcy was held by the 1st Earl of Somerset from 1613, when the 1st Viscount Rochester was created Baron Brancepeth and Earl of Somerset, until the earl's death in 1645, when all his titles became extinct

Rochford, Viscount (E, 1525 - forfeited 1538)

Rochford, Viscount (E, 1621 - 1677) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Dover from 1628, when the 1st Viscount Rochford was created Earl of Dover, until 1677, when on the death of the 2nd Earl of Dover both titles became extinct

 

St Albans, Viscount (E, 1621 - 1626)

Savage, Viscount (E, 1626 - 1737) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls Rivers from 1640, when the 2nd Viscount Savage succeeded his maternal grandfather as 2nd Earl Rivers, until 1737, when on the death of the 5th Earl Rivers all his titles became extinct

Saye and Sele, Viscount (E, 1624 - 1781)

Sondes, Viscount (E, 1676 - 1709) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Feversham from its creation in 1676, when Sir George Sondes MP was created Baron of Throwley, Viscount Sondes and Earl of Feversham, until 1709, when on the death of the 2nd Earl of Feversham all his titles became extinct

Stafford, Viscount (E, 1640 - attainted 1680)

Sydney, Viscount (E, 1689 - 1704) - the viscountcy was held by the 1st Earl of Romney from 1694, when the 1st Viscount Sydney was created Earl of Romney, until the earl's death in 1704 when all his titles became extinct

 

Thame, Viscount (E, 1621 - 1622) - the viscountcy was held by the 1st Earl of Berkshire from its creation in 1621, when the 2nd Baron Norreys was created Viscount Thame and Earl of Berkshire, until 1622, when the earl died without a son and heir and the Viscountcy of Thame and the Earldom of Berkshire became extinct

Thetford, Viscount (E, 1672 - abeyant 1936) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Arlington (and later by the Dukes of Grafton), from its created in 1672 when the 1st Baron Arlington was created Baron Arlington, Viscount Thetford and Earl of Arlington, until 1936, when on the death of the 9th Duke of Grafton the Arlington titles fell into abeyance between his two sisters

Totnes, Viscount (E, 1675 - 1680) - the viscountcy was held by the 1st Earl of Plymouth from its creation in 1686, when Charles FitzCharles, illegitimate son of King Charles II, was created Baron Dartmouth, Viscount Totnes and Earl of Plymouth, until his death in 1680, when all his titles became extinct

Tunbridge, Viscount (E, 1624 - 1657) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Clanricarde from 1624, when the 4th Earl of Clanricarde was created Baron Somerhill and Viscount Tunbridge, until 1657, when on the death of the 1st Marquess of Clanricarde both titles created in 1624 became extinct

Tunbridge, Viscount (E, 1695 - 1830) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Rochford from its creation in 1695, when Lieut Gen William Nassau de Zuylesteyn was created Baron Enfield, Viscount Tunbridge and Earl of Rochford, until 1830, when on the death of the 5th Earl of Rochford all his titles became extinct

 

Villiers, Viscount (E, 1616 - 1687) - the 1st Viscount Villiers was created successively Earl of Buckingham, Marquess of Buckingham and Duke of Buckingham; the viscountcy was held by the Dukes of Buckingham from 1623 until the death of the 2nd Duke of Buckingham in 1687 when all these titles became extinct.

 

Wallingford, Viscount (E, 1616 - ?dormant 1632) - the viscountcy was held by the 1st Earl of Banbury from 1626, when the 1st Viscount Wallingford was created Earl of Banbury, until 1632, when on the death of the 1st Earl of Banbury the viscountcy became extinct or dormant

Welles, Viscount (E, 1486 - 1499)

Wentworth, Viscount (E, 1628 - attainted 1641 - attainder reversed 1662 - extinct 1695) - the viscountcy was held by the 1st Earl of Strafford from 1640, when the 1st Viscount Wentworth was created Baron Raby and Earl of Strafford, until 1641, when the earl was attainted and executed for treason and all his titles forfeited

Wentworth, Viscount (E, 1641 - 1695) - six months after the execution of the 1st Earl of Strafford (cr. 1640) in 1641, his son was granted all the titles of his late father; in 1662 the attainder of his father was reversed and consequently the 1st Earl of Strafford of the second creation became also the 2nd Earl of Strafford of the first creation; with the exception of the Barony of Raby all his titles became extinct on his death in 1695

Wimbledon, Viscount (E, 1626 - 1638)

Winchendon, Viscount (E, 1706 - forfeited 1729) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Wharton from 1706, when the 5th Baron Wharton was created Viscount Winchendon and Earl of Wharton, by the Marquess of Wharton from 1714/5, when the 1st Earl of Wharton was created Marquess of Wharton, and by the 1st Duke of Wharton from 1718, when, as 2nd Marquess of Wharton, he was created Duke of Wharton, until his outlawry for high treason in 1729, when all his titles became forfeited

 

Yarmouth, Viscount (E, 1673 - 1732) - the viscountcy was held by the Earls of Yarmouth from 1679, when the 1st Viscount Yarmouth was created Earl of Yarmouth, until 1732, when on the death of the 2nd Earl of Yarmouth all his titles became extinct
