Member of Parliament for Sligo 1639; suc. his father as 2nd Viscount Taaffe c. 9 Jan 1641/2; Governor of Munster 1642-46; in command of the rebel Roman Catholic Irish in Connaught 1644 and in Munster 1647, being severely defeated by Lord Inchiquin at the Battle of Mallow 1647; Master of the Irish Ordnance 1649; actively supported the Royalist side in the Civil War and was excepted from pardon by Cromwell's Act of Settlement; at the Restoration of King Charles II in 1661 he received a pension of £800 per annum which was increased to £4,000 per annum when he was created Earl of Carlingford
