Capt Hon Robert McCarthy RN, styled Viscount Muskerry 1685-1734 and self-styled Earl of Clancarty 1734-69, commanded HMS Adventure c. 1730, Governor of Newfoundland 1733-35, retired to France 1741 on an annual pension of £1,000 when his claim to the Earldom of Clancarty was not recognised, implicated in the Jacobite Rising 1745 after which he was excepted from the Act of Indemnity 1747 (b. 1685; d. 19 Sep 1769), mar. (1) Joanna Player (b. 17 Oct 1693; d. 13 Jan 1759), dau. of Capt Henry Player RN, of Alverstoke, co. Hampshire, by his second wife Joanna Benett, dau. of William Benett, of Fareham, co. Surrey, and had issue:

a Lord of the Bedchamber in Ireland to King James II 1689; in command of a regiment of infantry in the Irish Army on the side of King James 1689; taken prisoner at the Siege of Cork 1690 and imprisoned in the Tower of London; he was attainted 11 May 1691 upon which both his peerages and vast estates were forfeited; he escaped to France in 1694, where he was in command of a troop of Horse Guards until 1697; returning secretly to England in 1698 to see his wife, he was betrayed by his brother-in-law, Charles, Lord Spencer, and again imprisoned in the Tower of London; he was pardoned following pleas by Lady Russell but at the cost of permanent exile; he was a Lord of the Bedchamber to the titular King James III 1707

On the attainder of the 4th Earl of Clancarty the Earldom of Clancarty was forfeited.
