The Barony of Clifton of Leighton Bromswold has been held by the Earls of Darnley since 5 Jul 1937.  It is interesting to note that in all its 402 year history the Barony of Clifton of Leighton Bromswold has only been on the Roll of the House of Lords for 23 years (10 years between 1608 and 1618, 7 years between 1706 and 1713, and 6 years between 1722 and 1728), and the rest of the time it was held either by females who at that time could not sit in the House of Lords or by peers of a higher rank.
