On the death of the 1st Marquess of Dorchester the Marquessate of Dorchester became extinct and the Earldom of Kingston-upon-Hull and other titles were inherited by his great-nephew, Robert Pierrepont, who became 3rd Earl of Kingston-upon-Hull
