Member of Parliament for Nottingham 1628-29; sum. to Parliament v.p. 11 Jan 1640/1 in his father's Barony of Pierrepont; Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire 1642; Member of the King's Council of War 1643; suc. his father 25 Jul 1643 as 2nd Earl of Kingston-upon-Hull; Privy Councillor 1644/5 and 1660-79; Joint Commissioner for the Office of Earl Marshal 1662 and 1673; Recorder of Nottingham 1666


On the death of the 1st Marquess of Dorchester the Marquessate of Dorchester became extinct and the Earldom of Kingston-upon-Hull and other titles were inherited by his great-nephew, Robert Pierrepont, who became 3rd Earl of Kingston-upon-Hull
