a loyal supporter of King Charles I, commanding a troop of horse in Scotland 1639 and raising a regiment of 12,000 Foot; Governor of Aberystwyth, Bridgnorth, etc.; Member of Parliament for Montgomeryshire 1640 and for Montgomery 1640-42; on succeeding to the peerage Parliament levied a large fine on him and ordered the destruction of Montgomery Castle

joined his brother in Booth's rebellion 1659; served in the French army 1672 but returned to England on succeeding to the peerage; Custos Rotulorum of Montgomeryshire 1679; a member of the Whig party, he was one of the petitioners for the exclusion of the Duke of York from the succession 1680; in arms on behalf of the Prince of Orange 1688; Cofferer of the Household 1689-91; Col of the 23rd Regiment of Foot (Welsh Fusiliers) 1689


On the death of the 4th Baron Herbert of Chirbury the Baronies of Herbert of Chirbury and Herbert of Castle Island became extinct.
