On the death of the 2nd Earl of Powis the Earldom of Powis became extinct as both his brother Richard Herbert and the other remainderman, Francis Herbert, had died before him. His brother-in-law, Edward [Clive], 2nd Baron Clive, was created Earl of Powis, etc., on 147 May 1804.
