on the death without issue on 3 Jan 1893 of his maternal uncle, the 3rd and last Baron Crewe of Crewe, he succeeded to the Crewe estates, and took by Royal Warrant dated 8 Jun 1894 the name of Crewe before that of Milnes

 

On the death of the 1st Marquess of Crewe without a surviving son and heir on 20 Jun 1945 the Barony of Houghton and his titles created in 1895 and 1911 became extinct.
