The Lordship of Hamilton was held by the Earls of Arran from 11 Aug 1503 until 12 Sep 1651, when William [Hamilton], 2nd Duke of Hamilton, 6th Earl of Arran, etc. died without immediate male heirs and the Earldom of Arran and the Lordship of Hamilton were assumed to have become dormant. Under the terms of the regrant of 15 Sep 1540 they should have passed to James [Hamilton], 2nd Earl of Abercorn, as heir male of James [Hamilton], 2nd Earl of Arran.
