on 15 Sep 1540 he had a new charter of the Earldom of Arran to him and the heirs male of his body with remainder to his brother and other persons of the name of Hamilton, in like manner, successively, whom failing, to his nearest heirs bearing the arms and name of Hamilton;  Regent of Scotland 1542-54;  granted the Duchy of Châtellérhault by King Henry II of France 8 Feb 1548/9

suc. his father 6 Apr 1604 as 2nd Marquess of Hamilton and his uncle Mar 1609 as 4th Earl of Arran


The Earldom of Arran was held by the Marquesses of Hamilton from April 1609 until 12 Apr 1643, when the 3rd Marquess of Hamilton was created Lord Aven and Innerdale, Earl of Arran and Cambridge, Marquess of Clydesdale and Duke of Hamilton, and by the Dukes of Hamilton from that date until 12 Sep 1651, when William [Hamilton], 2nd Duke of Hamilton, 6th Earl of Arran, etc. died without immediate male heirs and the earldom was assumed to have become dormant.  Under the terms of the regrant of 15 Sep 1540 it should have passed to James [Hamilton], 2nd Earl of Abercorn, as heir male of James [Hamilton], 2nd Earl of Arran.
