On the death of the 1st Earl of Lonsdale the Earldom of Lonsdale and other titles created in 1784 became extinct but the Barony and Viscountcy of Lowther created in 1797 passed under the terms of the special remainder to Sir William Lowther, 2nd Bt., of Swillington, co. York, later 1st Earl of Lonsdale.
