received a grant of Bantry and other properties 1537; aided the Lord Deputy against the O'Connors 1537; Keeper of Ferns Castle 1538; knighted 1546/7; in the grant creating the Viscountcy of Mountgarret he is described as "Richardus Butler, Miles, filius secondo genitus Petri Buler, Militis, nuper Comitis Ormond et Ossory defuncti"; he has been said by some also to have been created Baron of Kells, but no mention is made of this title in the grant (Editor's Note: the Editor has been informed that the 17th Viscount Moutgarret assigned all his rights in the "Barony of Kells" to a Dr Butler, whose exact relationship to the late Viscount is not known. Not only is there no evidence of a Barony of Kells being granted to the 1st Viscount Moutgarret, but even if it was so granted a Parliamentary title, which is what this title would have been had it been granted to the 1st Viscount Mountgarret, can only be assigned by the Crown following a surrender and re-grant of the original title, a process not known within the Peerage of Ireland.)
