admitted to the Middle Temple 1617;  Member of Parliament for Herefordshire 1621-22 and 1624-25, and for Hereford 1625 and 1628-29;  suc. his grandfather in the family estates 1623;  member of the Council of the Marches 1623;  a supporter of the King's favourite, the Duke of Buckingham, and was with him in the La Rochelle expedition 1627;  Ambassador to France 1635-39;  High Steward of Hereford 1631 and 1660-71;  an ardent supporter of the King in the Civil War, her was surprised by General Waller at Hereford in 1643, captured and sent to London, where he remained a prisoner for more than 3 years;  with his houses in Herefordshire plundered and his estates sequestrated, he compounded with the Parliamentary authorities for £2,690 in 1646/7

On the death of the 3rd Viscount Scudamore the Irish Viscountcy of Scudamore and the English Baronetcy became extinct. The Scudamore family estate of Holme Lacy, co. Hereford, passed to his only child, Frances, and eventually to her only child, Frances, Duchess of Norfolk . On the Duchess's death in 1820 all the issue of the 1st Viscount Scudamore became extinct, and the Holme Lacy estate passed to the heir at law, Capt Sir Edwyn Francis Stanhope later Scudamore-Stanhope, 2nd Bt. RN, great-grandson of the 1st Viscount's sister, Mary Scudamore, and her husband, Sir Giles Brydges, 1st Bt. Sir Edwyn was father of Henry Edwyn Chandos [Stanhope later Scudamore-Stanhope], 9th Earl of Chesterfield. The Herefordshire estates were sold in 1909.
