upon inheriting the estates of Henry [O'Brien], 7th Earl of Thomond (the husband of his mother's sister) in 1741, he assumed under the late Earl's will the name of O'Brien after that of Wyndham; Member of Parliament (Tory) for Taunton 1745-47, for Minehead 1747-54 and 1761-68, for Cockermouth 1754-61 and for Winchilsea 1768-74; a Lord of the Treasury 1755-56; Privy Councillor 1757; Treasurer of the Household 1757-61; Cofferor of the Household 1761-65; Lord Lieutenant of Somerset 1764-73

On the death of the 1st Earl of Thomond the Earldom of Thomond became extinct.
