On the death of the 1st Duke of Lauderdale the Dukedom of Lauderdale and the other Scottish peerages created in 1672 and the English peerages created in 1674 became extinct and the Earldom of Lauderdale and other peerages inherited from his father passed to his brother, Hon Charles Maitland, who became 3rd Earl of Lauderdale
