knighted 1590; Deputy Keeper of Liddesdale 1593; Warden of the Middle March 1593; Privy Councillor [S] 1599; a Gentleman of the Bedchamber 1607; Lord Privy Seal [S] 1637-48/9; having no surv. sons he surrendered his titles and estates to the Crown 1643 and obtained a novodamus to him and the heirs male of his body, which failing to the heirs and assigns nominated by him; made a nomination 1646 in favour of (i) his grandson by his eldest daughter, Sir William Drummond, and his issue in tail male, (ii) of his great-grandsons in like manner, i.e. the second and other younger sons of Jane Drummond, the sister of Sir William Drummond, by her husband John [Fleming], 3rd Earl of Wigtown - in each case, however, there was a proviso that the nominee should marry the eldest daughter of his late son, Hon Harry Ker, styled Lord Ker, or failing her the second, third or fourth and youngest daughter of the said Lord Ker, which failing (iii) of the eldest daughter of Hon Harry Ker, styled Lord Ker, without division and to her heirs male, which failing (iv) to his own heirs male whomsoever; on his death the Lordship of Roxburghe became extinct
