The Earldom of Temple was held by the Marquesses of Buckingham (who were created Dukes of Buckingham and Chandos in 1822) from 1784 until 1889 when, on the death of Richard Plantagenet Campbell [Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville], 3rd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, 6th Earl Temple, etc. without a male heir, the Earldom of Temple became extinct.
