After the death of Countess Philippa in 1378 the Earldom of Ulster passed to her eldest son, Roger Mortimer, later 4th Earl of March; from him it passed to his eldest son, Edmund [Mortimer], 5th and last Earl of March, and from him to his nephew, Richard [Plantagenet], 3rd Duke of York; after Duke Richard's execution in 1460 it passed to his eldest surviving son, Edward [Plantagenet], 4th Duke of York, who ascended the Throne in 1461 as King Edward IV, whereupon the Earldom of Ulster and the Barony of Burgh were merged in the Crown.
