Quarterly, 1st and 4th, Three Cinquefoils Ermine (Hamilton);  2nd and 3rd, Argent a Ship sails furled Sable (Arran), all within a Bordure company Argent and Azure the first charged with Hearts Gules and the second with Mullets of the last

accompanied the Duke of Hamilton on his unsuccessful expedition into England 1648 and was captured and imprisoned for a year;  joined King Charles II in the Netherlands;  when the King invaded England in 1651 Lord Bargeny was sent to Scotland to raise a force;  he was again taken prisoner and was imprisoned in the Tower of London for about a year;  he was exempted from Cromwell's Act of Grace and Pardon 1654

imprisoned on an indictment of high treason 1679 for a conspiracy against Episcopacy, against the life of the Duke of Lauderdale, etc., but was never brought to trial and was released the next year with a fine of 50,000 marks; raised a regiment of 600 foot to promote the Revolution 1689
