Both Earldoms of Clanricarde were held by the Marquesses of Clanricarde from 26 Nov 1825 until 12 Apr 1916, when on the death of Hubert George [de Burgh later de Burgh-Canning], 2nd Marquess of Clanricarde, 15th and 3rd Earl of Clanricarde, etc., without a male heir, all his titles became extinct except for the Earldom of Clanricarde created in 1800, which under the terms of the special remainder contained in the Letters Patent creating the title passed to his cousin once removed George Ulick [Browne], 6th Marquess of Sligo, as the next heir of the 1st Earl of Clanricarde of this creation, passing over the five sisters of the late Marquess and their descendants.
