On the death of the 9th Earl of Pembroke the Earldom of Pembroke became dormant, with the office of Marshal passing to his eldest sister and coheiress, Maud, Countess of Norfolk. His nephew-in-law, Sir William de Valence, who married Joan de Munchensy, Lady of Pembroke and Wexford, in 1247, was summoned to Parliament as Earl of Pembroke in 1295 by his nephew, King Edward I. Whether this was a recognition that as William and his wife were in possession of the Honour of Pembroke they were therefore entitled to the earldom, or it was a new, if somewhat irregular, creation is a moot point. It was more than likely that Joan was regarded as having inherited the Earldom of Pembroke from her uncle when she inherited the Castle and Honour of Pembroke. Earl William died in 1296, and his widow styled herself Countess of Pembroke on many occasions before her own death in 1307. The Complete Peerage says: "After her death in 1307 her son and heir, Aymer de Valence, was tacitly recognised as Earl of Pembroke and was always given that title and treated as Earl.
