one of the most favoured of the Gentlemen of the Bedchamber to King James VI; accompanied the King to England and made a Knight of the Bath at the King's Coronation 1603; acquired the Constabulary of Dingwall 1607 and purchased the lands of the Barony; his father-in-law had settled nearly all his lands on his nephew and heir male, Sir Walter Butler, of Kilcash, co. Tipperary ; the new Earl of Ormonde and Ossory refused to part with any of these to Lord Dingwall, even though the King had made an aware of these lands to his favourite, Lord Dingwall, and his wife in 1618, and as a consequence Lord Ormonde and Ossory was kept a prisoner in the Fleet Prison, London, from 1619 to 1624/5; on the Earl of Desmond's death the Earldom of Desmond passed to George [Feilding], 1st Viscount Callan, under the 1622 charter even though he had not in the end married the Earl's daughter
