On 17 Jun 1824 he obtained a reversal of the attainder of his great-great-grandfather, William [Howard], 1st Baron Stafford later 1st Viscount Stafford, whereby he became 8th Baron Stafford, and on 6 Jul 1825 the House of Lords resolved that he "had made out his claim to the title, dignity and honour of Baron Stafford" as created by letters patent dated 12 Sep 1640.

 

The Jerningham baronetcy was held by the Barons Stafford from 6 Jul 1825 until 12 Jun 1913, when on the death of Fitzherbert Edward [Stafford-Jerningham], 11th Baron Stafford and 10th Baronet, the Barony of Stafford passed to his sister's son as heir-general and the baronetcy to his second cousin once removed as heir male,
