The House of Stuart (1603 - 1714)

 The union of England and Scotland under King James was symbolised heraldically by combining the

arms of his two realms. The was some contention as to how they should be marshalled as he had

succeeded to the English arms through the female line. The solution reached was to have different arms

for both countries, since in England it was considered that the larger and wealthier country should have

precedence. The arms of Ireland, regularly incorporated for the first time, were relegated to the third quarter.

Sovereigns and this is reflected heraldically in the Royal Arms, where

In the early part of her reign Queen Anne bore the same Royal Arms as her father and uncle.

Following the Act of Union with Scotland in 1707 the Royal Arms were changed to express the

Union heraldically. In the first and fourth quarters the arms of England and Scotland were

impaled and the arms of France, not yet abandoned, were relegated to the second quarter for

the first time in England. The Scottish Royal Arms were changed in a similar way.
